Christiaan VIII was king of Denmark from 1839 to 1848. He was the eldest son of Frederik van Denmark and Sophia van Mecklenburg and was born in Copenhagen.

Under pressure from the international community, and from Sweden, he soon had to give up the Norwegian throne. He was succeeded by Karel XIII van Sweden (Karel II in Norway).
